This trail, on the Powell Lake side of Valentine Mountain, a municipal park at the summit of Valentine, offers tremendous views up the lake, swimming opportunities, and a short section of stiff climbing. One section, as the trail turns up away from the lake is difficult to spot. If you reach a log sort area, you have gone too far. Turn around and watch for the trail to turn up from the Lake and climb up to the logging road. On the logging road the trail turns back toward the bridge about 200 yards (See photo of boys pointing to trail emerging up-close and leaving far off) before it climbs steeply up the backside of Valentine Mountain. The trail offers a few junctions, the first right takes one to the road to the summit of Valentine. Go straight. A left turns to Block Bay, the log sort. Not a safe place to hike, go straight. Then two rights not far from each other offer a hike around Valentine Mountain to the cemetery in Cranberry or down into Mowat Bay, but further up the valley away from Powell Lake. Do not take these rights. Finally the trail turns down steeply to the left toward Mowat Bay. Another trail continues straight ahead. Do not take it. It meets the other trails up the valley. The trail continues from Mowat Bay, down by the water past the swimming area and playground. Venture past the volley ball net posts and a trail will show it self, just in the woods off the shoreline.
